| This is completely
understandable. Unless you deal with this type of thing on a regular basis you
probably don't have the first idea of what some of it means so we will try to define them
for you below: a) DOMAIN NAME: A domain
name is an address used to identify and locate the web pages on the Internet. A domain
name (www.yourname.com) is hierarchical and often conveys information about the type of
entity using the domain name.
b) .COM: The extension ".com" is
distributed by the American Registrar and means "commercial enterprise". If you
are an organization rather than a business, you would have the extension ".org".
c) SEARCH ENGINE: Search Engines index Websites
on the Internet so when you do a search, for example, "Website packages", they
search their huge database for matches. Yahoo!, is the best know search engine.
d) HOSTING: The place your Website resides on
our state-of-the-art web servers and establish a presence on the Internet with your own
unique domain name (www.yourdomainname.com). All of the pages and graphics of your
site are stored on a host.
e) SERVERS: The actual computer that stores
your Website & graphics. When somebody types in your domain name
(www.yourdomainname.com) the Internet knows, from the domain name registration process, to
go to the host/server where your site is stored to get the web pages for display.
f) SPACE: The amount of data that can be
stored in your account. For example, if each picture on your site is 100KB and you
have a 100MB account, you would be able to store 1000 pictures of that size before you ran
out of space.
g) BANDWIDTH: The amount of data that is
transferred from your account to the world wide web when people view your site. When
people go to a site, each page has a combination of text and pictures on it. If the
page itself where 10KB and it had another 100KB of pictures and graphics on it, each time
somebody loaded that page on their browser at home, it would cost you 110KB of bandwidth
from your allotted bandwidth.
